Daniel 3:28

3:28 Nebuchadnezzar exclaimed, ¹  “Praised be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent forth his angel ²  and has rescued his servants who trusted in him, ignoring ³  the edict of the king and giving up their bodies rather than ⁴  serve or pay homage to any god other than their God!

Daniel 8:4

8:4 I saw that the ram was butting westward, northward, and southward. No animal ⁵  was able to stand before it, and there was none who could deliver from its power. ⁶  It did as it pleased and acted arrogantly. ⁷

[3:28]  ² sn The king identifies the “son of the gods” (v. 25) as an angel. Comparable Hebrew expressions are used elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible for the members of God’s angelic assembly (see Gen 6:2, 4; Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7; Pss 29:1; 89:6). An angel later comes to rescue Daniel from the lions (Dan 6:22).

[3:28]  ⁴ tn Aram “so that they might not.”

[8:4]  ⁵ tn Or “beast” (NAB).

[8:4]  ⁶ tn Heb “hand.” So also in v. 7.

[8:4]  ⁷ tn In the Hiphil the Hebrew verb גָּדַל (gadal, “to make great; to magnify”) can have either a positive or a negative sense. For the former, used especially of God, see Ps 126:2, 3; Joel 2:21. In this chapter (8:4, 8, 11, 25) the word has a pejorative sense, describing the self-glorification of this king. The sense seems to be that of vainly assuming one’s own superiority through deliberate hubris.
